As far as I know the amazon files have always been variable bit rate. I have just checked some older files and the bit rate is all over the place but they work fine. When I picked my car up from service I tried the album in another Evoque (2013 model) and to the techies surprise it didn't play. The mystery continues

Well the mystery does in a way, but Philskill has proved that if you use a conversion programme the files will play, my original album now does.

I'll let him explain the techie stuff.

I also used a conversion program. I converted to wav and then back to mp3 and they play ok. My point was that something must have changed at amazon with their mp3 files and it seems to have affected the Evoque player

As we are aware, music files are stored in kb/s. Whereas the Evoque technology can only play at 33, 45 or 78 rpm

I've been having this issue with odd VBR files for years, gave up with them as there's always a player out there that does not like them somewhere. In theory they should work on any player since it's a standard, but differing software being the way it is will manage to get the decoding wrong sometimes.

The file I Re-coded for Evo-King were 3min 15s long but depending on which Rip Program I used, the percieved length would be read differently, 1 played but said it was 18 mins long and then repeated 6 times for 18 mins...!?

It maybe Amazon have upgraded thier Rip program recently to a new version and it's generating different compression codings that some players can't deal with. (possibly looks like they use FreeRIP from the file properties! and yet FreeRip failed to re-code it properly)

I just steer clear of VBR and avoid these problems, and always like to have the original at a sweet 1411Kb/s.

(Cjfp.. that's why the Meridian sounds so sweet, it's good ole analogue not digital... Laughing )

The saga continues. Today I downloaded Wildewoman by Lucius. I tried google downloads due to the problem I had with amazon. Downloaded the file onto my memory stick and popes into my car. Guess what? It came up with the same error and wouldn't play. What's going on with these latest mp3 files. They work ok in my iTunes and other devices

Speary, maybe you should report this to Pete, I think there must be a format change in the ripping process that the Evoque Software can't support. It's like the resetting T.V. Issue when the DTV format changed, it needed a software update. LR should be made aware, if enough customers report it, hopefully it'll get looked at and we'll all get a software update.

And maybe they can update the Nav software and Nav maps at the same time.

I've reported this to Mike@LRCS. Also pointing out that these files play in my Alfa.

His response was that the Evoque plays MPEG Audio, which Amazon files are.

If only it was as simple as that.
