£174 to do a one-time maps update is taking the peepee.

Even if it was for vehicle lifetime updates it would be steep, especially when you can get free lifetime updates on standalone TomTom/Garmin etc units costing less than £100 and can navigate using mobile phones using google-maps/waze etc for free with real-time updates.

As a follow on it appears that aftermarket options might be available although there isnt an active link from the following page, if an aftermarket sat-nav can be added to to the screen with easy updates this might be a good alternative to the factory updates?

http://www.motormods.co.uk/sat_nav.html -approx 3/4 of the way down the page.

Or how about mirroring your smartphone to the screen?

I agree completely and I would never want to pay for map updates in today's modern age where accurate and up to date mapping from the internet is free.

Just another way the dealer can earn a bit of money from us. Surely with the maps doing live traffic updates and changing routes the technology must be there for "live" map updates. Or am I missing something?

No the dealer wont update the Maps, He'll only update the system if LR publish an update for your car, and they'll only do that for Bug Fixes.

I asked the dealer if he could beat the website price and do the update while it was in for service thinking it might be an easy bit of business for them and save me a few pounds, and they said they couldn't get them cheaper and they don't even like doing it as it takes so long and said I should buy off the website direct.

Stupid thing is they are only "Here" maps... I have these on my phone, and downloaded the whole of Europe for free in 20 mins.

Woah! no I said I now have a Volvo V40 Cross country too.. looked into updated that and it's free... so was just venting my frustration at paying LR £165 to upgrade my Evoque just once when other manufacturers are free!

LR are still in the 70's with their sat nav upgrades...

But they are both using "Here" Maps, so maybe some clever Techie could break the LR to update using generic maps.

Me bad I thought the Volvo used the same sat nav as JLR! More wishful thinking than anything else. I will go to the dealer and pay the £160 because I know times are hard for them maybe I will use the free maps on my phone when I need one!

So finally applied my Nav update to my Evoque today...
Got the registration code from the website which you enter at the start of this process on the touch screen.

Well actually I only started the update... as Angeli mentioned it takes 2h 38min... but does continue where left it off so don't have to do in one go.

I can see why my dealer didn't want to do this... what a waste of time! Wasn't going to leave engine running for that time so it will finish over the next journeys I do, which may be a long time from now given my current usage on my Evoque!
