HEADLAMPS - DRIVING ABROAD The headlamp beam pattern is suitable for driving on either side of the road. That's from page 40 of the driver handbook. There is definitely more of a 'stepped' cut off on Halogen lights, (biased to the left on RHD cars or the right on LHD cars) to that on the Xenon lights. I will try and illustrate this for you. Look at the angle of the vertical step up to the right on the Halogen beam of this LHD car. I would say the step up is around 50-60 degrees from horizontal. Here again with the angle of the 'step up' illustrated. . Apologies for this pic not being taken in the dark, but you can see on the beam pattern of my adaptive Xenons (RHD) that the angle of the step up (to the left) is much less steep. I measured it as being around 10 degrees. The beam itself looks much flatter than that of the Halogen lights. Here again showing the much shallower angle of the step up. I don't know for sure what the beam pattern is like on normal Xenon lights though, I'm afraid. However there's a thread where Tim says he was driving in the UK with one of our continental members driving his LHD, Xenon equipped Evoque following Tim in the dark. Tim said that the lights were fine to be followed by, so the same would apply if the LHD car was oncoming on the opposite side of the road. It doesn't sound like it would dazzle either oncoming traffic or drivers in front. When the outside ring around is full and packed with lorrys, then drive trough instead of around |
