RE: What Advantage bigger wheels or not? - BMW86 - 26-12-2011 12:43am

I thought I could ask here instead of creating a new thread. I have searched but havent' come across too much info.

Does anyone have pictures of 22s and would it be too big? Is there enough clearance to run 10 inch wide wheels?

I saw someone's newly delivered Evoque with 20s and it looked perfect, 21s would be okay but I'm not sure if 22s is pushing it.

I don't think there's clearance to run wider wheels because the standard ones almost protrude from the bodywork, to the extent they added small wings to the rear wheel arch liner to keep it legal. As for bigger wheels, if you keep to the same rolling radius, you can have as big wheels you like, providing you can find tyres and don't mind the ride.

Edit: as you say, 20s look perfect and, by definition, you cannot improve on perfection.

We may actually find tyres are the biggest single maintenance expense on this car. I agree TPMS would be useful, just wish they had provided a near-real time display for the money.

Wow. Didn't realise they were that pricey. Personally I went for 20" purely for the looks. The Evoque is such a unique looking car, I think it's a shame to go for anything but the best looking wheels/trim/paint colour etc. And for £40k, I was going to make damn sure I got what I wanted rather than what had the best resale or whatever.

As for kerbing, I'm aware of it but just take a bit of extra care. 3500 miles and not a mark. Yet.

and what do YOU think about wheelspacers
on my car (febr2012) will be the standard style2 18"
and i just recieved an offer for H&R spacers for 4cm(1.5") widening
and -/- 3 cm(1.18") lowering......

whats the width of the 18" compared to the 20", as a i understood both were 8.5J if this is the case no need for spacers.

I want to determine how much space and allowance the stock Evoque has for fitting wider wheels, without rubbing and reducing the full lock capacity.....Can someone with their car please have a look and see when the front wheels are turned full lock, how much clearance is left between the tyre and the inner-wheel-well-housing-wall? Thanks in advance.

Agree with DanDavis...whilst the Evoque is an extremely capable car (arguably the best allrounder in the world...ah, from now on, my car is called Botham) the majority of us were blown away by the looks...as such, it seems a shame not to go for the optimum look (subject to personal taste of course) especially when the ride quality difference is hardly noticable in truth.

As for kerbing...pot-holes can be an issue on 20's perhaps but this is hopefully rare...but in terms of kerbs, if you bash a 20" on a kerb, the significant probability is that you would have bashed the 18" as well! Don't forget that 18's are pretty big too! Also, why are you all hitting curbs???

So in summary...apart from tyre cost, which is a very valid issue for many, especially if considering winter tyres, there is far more reason to get 20's than there are reasons against.

Style 3's are a nice 19" option, but you couldn't choose style 3 on 5dr, only the coupe, or at least that was the case back last June.

I have 19" and if I meet anything bigger than a small hatch back on the road close to home I have to mount a high kerb to get out the way.

No damage so far, I would not like to be doing this with a 20" wheel though. 19" Prestige standard wheels sit inside the profile of the tyre so are somewhat resistant to minor kerb encounters.

Has anyone kerbed 19" wheel yet?

Claud, when you get a moment, can you please provide the answer to the above question. Thanks.
