NEUTRAL
Disconnects drive to the wheels. Use the
parking brake while N is selected.
Do not use for vehicle recovery purposes.

TRANSMISSION FAULT
In the event that the transmission develops a
fault, a warning message may be displayed in
the message centre and only limited gears may
become available. You should seek qualified
assistance immediately.

Do not tow the vehicle if the gearbox
cannot be set in neutral.

Ok...so I know nothing about the workings of a car...but I don't uderstand the above at all. Firstly it says that you should not use Neutral for Recovery Purposes...and then it says not to tow the vehicle if the gearbox cannot be set in Neutral???

Yep, clear as mud!

If you set the gearbox in N and tow the vehicle with (of course) the engine turn off, after few minutes the gearbox will automatically reset in P. You can imagine what that means?! If the gearbox can't be set in NEUTARL it means that your traction is blocked and of course this is not good for towing... In both cases your transmission is blocked!

So basically, it can't be towed! Which is something Tim had previously said I think...

When my parents went, it had to be put into neutral and then onto a flat bed

Sorry to hear about your incident, hope it's just a software glitch...

RE: Gearbox fault! - defender_uk - 29-10-2011 06:20pm

sure hope it is....i presume there is just a sensor fault..problem with everything being so high tech! Had a few sensor faults on various motors I use for work and been completely grounded by them....

Having said that, an on-board diagnostics module like bell-services offer, might as well come in handy.

These two docs may come in handy, Enjoy Smile
