RE: Winter tyres - Uk catches up? - hybris - 27-10-2011 07:42pm Sorry to repeat myself. There is no setting on your car that will replace real winter tires. The link to the auto car article do explain what I said in another thread. Stone hard summer tires are like driving on polished rocks. The 4*4 and antispin systems will help you but try braking hard on snow/ice or a panic maneuver. In that situations you want winter tires. I would say eve spiked winter tires. That is what I drive on over here but that is Sweden. I go for the Nokian Hakka 7 tires. Love them. If you are not allowed to used spiked tires then look at the Nokian Hakka R. RE: Winter tyres - Uk catches up? - rchrdleigh - 27-10-2011 07:54pm The problem we face in the UK is that we don't as a rule get that much snow, unless you live in the Highlands of Scotland or some of the more upland areas of England and Wales. Therefore, until recently there has been no real need or demand for winter tyres as what little snow we tend to get is very wet and doesn't last. However, the more significant snowfalls of the last two winters and the associated cold weather have started to get people thinking about winter tyres. There are many 4x4 owners who have run on summer tyres for the last 2 winters and not experienced any problems and there are others who have had problems. I agree with Hybris that no setting which will replace winter tyres and in the conditions experienced in Scandinavia and Continental Europe winter tyres are a definite must. In the UK the jury is still out and for those running on summer tyres through the winter the correct application of the Terrain Response will improve your chances of avoiding problems providing you drive at a speed applicable to the conditions. It is also worth remembering that LR Experience vehicles in the UK run all year round on standard factory fit tyres. In the wet and snow they just adjust the speed and route to match the prevailing conditions. There seem to be some specifically listed for 4x4, cant imagine what the difference is, but they are more expensive than the non 4x4 equivalent, maybe a weight thing as could fit to a bigger Range for example I guess, any ideas if this is neccessary? RE: Winter tyres - Uk catches up? - bell-auto-services - 27-10-2011 11:13pm I think as long at the speed rating and weight rating is good for the car then they are ok, some 4x4 tyres are 6 ply walls and are a thinker to protect them from damage and would cost more. Ive found a set of 18" on Ebay for 420 all in from a Freelander 2, ill fit these. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/18-GENUINE-LANDROVER-FREELANDER-3-2-ALLOY-WHEELS-5x108-/110752968661?pt=UK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Trims_Car_Rims_ET&hash=item19c9642fd5 Pete RE: Winter tyres - Uk catches up? - PhilSkill - 27-10-2011 11:27pm Nice find, All I need is my Evoque and I can start to get sorted, much longer I'll be buying winters for the Mazda... I didn't bother with Winter tyres on my Freelander either last winter or the winter before & I blew away most other cars out there in the snow (loved leaving all the BMW's lol). I have a customer that owns a tyre business so I could get a good deal ( in theory) on them if I really wanted. |
