Full Version: Will 255/45/20 work on style 6 or style 7 factory 20's?

I recognize this is an 8 inch wide rim, so is it a bit too wide, or can it be done ?

Absolutely it works...i have 255/45x20 on my style 7's.
I payed my dealership extra to have these fitted apon my delivery, with the view of ensuring slightly more rim protection from kerbing. It's just 5mm more protrusion, but it does help.

Also, how would you say the ride , handling and the overall look compares to the stock 245/45/20 's ?

The tyres from the factory were the Michelin Altitude 245/45x20, and i replaced them with the Continental Crosscontact 255/45x20. I chose the Continentals over the Michelins because even in 245 form,they are a fatter looking tyre,due to the squarer shoulders and general mold, where as the Michelins side-profile tends to tapper inwards from the rim.
Now to be honest,the 255's still looks much the same as an Evoque wearing 245 Continentals, but as i mentioned previously, the extra 5mm width is marginally more re-assuring from kerbing, but the fatter look of the Conti's over the Michelin's is the biggest visual difference, even in 245 form.
From what i've read,the Michelins are a great performing tyre, but i have to admit, i'm really impressed with these Continentals,as they are performing exceptionally well in wet and dry conditions, plus i've covered nearly 10000kms, and i've still got 7mm's of tread left.

Thanks for the pics -- very nice evoque. I have not seen one in person yet in Indus it looks nice!

Do you notice a difference in the ride or the handling it all ? I'm wondering if the extra sidewall makes it a bit too squirmy around corners ?

You are very right about the continentals - they have a much " beefier" more aggressive look to them they suit the evoque much better than the look of the michelins.

I struggled with that decision - continentals versus Michelins for some time and am very glad I went with the continentals from both an aesthetic and handling viewpoint.

My decision was confirmed when I saw both tires on 2 evoques parked side by side.

Regarding your question above, i never actually got to test against the Michelins ,so i can't really compare against them, but did test a demo with the Conti's in 245 and i detected no difference in the Evoques presice handling,and the ride story is also much the same.
In summery,this very minor 5mm increase in width and height is not noticable, and it's only when you drastically increase the width and height of a tyre that handling would get squirmy.
In this case it was important that the profile stayed close to original, and the width of 255 is the maximum industry recommended width allowed for a 8 inch rim.
