Sorry to hear that man. At least you'll get more sympathy over here than the folks on RangeRovers.net - most of the responses are "well, it's your fault for not testing that out before you bought it" - seriously? As an interactive designer of many years, I'm qualified to say this is definitely a BUG.
Barton Evoque actually nailed the work around on this, I just tested it so here's the breakdown. Your results may vary.
I got it to work two ways depending on if your radio is already on Bluetooth or not:
1) Connect iPhone to lightning charging cable plugged into iPod
2) Turn on vehicle or just to acc (no foot on brake).
3) Start playing your streaming service on your iPhone (Pandora/Spotify, etc)
4) From radio/sat/cd, navigate to bluetooth as the source.
5) It will tell you to connect a device, it then said it connected to my phone
6) Then it refreshes and informs you that it failed to connect the audio
7) Go to the device select screen and verify that your phone is in fact connected (mine was highlighted), return to previous screen, and instead of Bluetooth click on your Phone (middle option on top row of sources)
Press play on your device again, music plays through while charging!
If you were already using Bluetooth on your stereo when you started up the car (or the next time you start it up), do steps 1-3 except the music will start streaming automatically, as long as your last music source on the iPhone was something other than the iPod.
NOTE: Unfortunately you can't hit Seek track on the steering wheel, that switches to iPod mode and just kills everything.
I have a MY12/May build as well. The salesman told me this had gotten some "update" that address the Bluetooth connection error, but I think it was more about messaging (it tells you the connection failed, and provides you with a "reconnect" button) and not related to reliability.
Good luck and let me know how that goes!

My iPhone 5 behaves fine with all phone functions via BT and all commands over BT initiated by either handset or vehicle perform flawlessly. I don't have any music on my phone as I just stream, so no audio over BT or over cable is just balls!
I have repaired etc... No good.
