Smart Key

Just got the message "Smart Key Battery Low", this key has been in regular use for 19 months, the other key rarely gets used.

1. I guess I should have swapped the keys over more regularly.

2. Anyone else come across this?

3. Is this covered in the Service or is there additional cost for battery replacement?

4. Time to check my Service Plan I suppose.

RE: Smart Key

Cheers cjfp.

Service is not due until next April, so I'll use the spare/rarely used key for now and have a word with my servicing dealer, not the same as my supplying dealer and much further away.

RE: Smart Key

My wife was told that it is essential to keep both keys in use, otherwise the unused one would lose its ability to communicate with the car. As it happens, we haven't bothered - I must get the spare one out sometime and try it!

RE: Smart Key

Apparently -
There is a detailed picture in the Owners Manual (page 11)of how to open the Smart Key.

To replace the battery:
1. Slide open the side cover.
2. Remove the emergency key and fit into the
receiver.
3. With the key unfolded, twist it to split the
Smart Key case open.
4. Remove the old battery and fit a new
CR2032 type battery (available from your
Retailer), with the positive (+) side
upwards.

A CR2032 will cost you a couple of quid

Yep. (But slightly thicker than the 2016)

Do you mean Morrisons ? Are you afraid of the site supermarket snobs ?

Whilst you are there, can you grab me a couple for my kitchen scales? - ta

RE: Smart Key

Replacing the battery in a key fob is hardly rocket science and it's expected the user will do it. Anyone who needs to run panic-stricken to their dealer is a bit of a wuss IMHO!

My Mercedes dealer seems to think that anyone owning the car is completely stupid and incapable of doing it and charges about £8 to do it as part of the major service. I made them take it off my bill last time and told them I pay 20p for Panasonic batteries.

Different story entirely for those with TPM where the batteries tend to last 4 - 6 years and it's a tyre off job to do it. Last time I had it done on 4 wheels, it was over £500 because of the need to rebalance the wheels, all in all a bit of a hassle. Once cars reach that sort of age, it will be worth doing it as a matter of routine at tyre change time.

Evoque was great, now in an RRS SVR

RE: Smart Key

Yes I meant Morrissons, it's across the road from me, 100 metres door to door, so very convenient.

I just don't like advertising other companies, I'll don't mind where I shop as long as I can get what I need.
