I thought both diesels are the same engine and that the sd4 is just remapped...

Yes its the same engine, I have the freelander SD4 at the moment, good engine but have went for TD4 in the evoque mainly because of cost. On the evoque all you get is extra power. On the freelander everything is colour coded to separate it from TD4.
