Carbon Offset

On the LR website it says

For every tonne of CO2 emitted during the manufacturing assembly of all our vehicles, Land Rover invests in carbon reduction projects that reduce an equivalent tonne of CO2 elsewhere. In addition, Land Rover enables customers to offset their first 45,000 miles/72,000 km of driving in their new vehicles.

Does this mean that I could, should I so wish, opt out.

This charge (£65) is shown on my spec sheet as a 'Dealer Fit Extra' so surely I could say 'No Thanks'

I know it was discussed here http://babyrr.com/forum/Thread-CO2-offse...ght=offset but there was never an opinion as to whether it was a compulsory thing or whether it wasn't a legally enforceable charge.

RE: Carbon Offset

Apparently you can not opt out. I would love too as i believe the whole carbon thing is a government con.

RE: Carbon Offset

The dealer I use didn't even know the answer to this, but suspected that I could refuse to pay. I guess it's one of those politically correct things to pay ...

RE: Carbon Offset

It's the word 'enables' that makes me very suspicious about the whole thing.

RE: Carbon Offset

Although it comes up on th LR invoice as a dealer option it's actually part of the basic on the road price, although it is shown separately. The big thing that I consider a con is that as the government do not recognise this as a green charitable donation it is then subjected to a full 20%vat payment, which when you think of it is the biggest con. If I wanted to give £65.00 to a greenhouse gas charity (which I don't ) a I wouldn't have to pay vat and b would be subject to gift aid, so the government would have to repay the tax element.

Arrived. Prestige SD4 Auto 5DR OG September 11

RE: Carbon Offset

It's on my paperwork as £65 (on both Net and Gross VAT calcs). Just had a good search through Google and all words like "allows" "enables" "opt" make it sound like it is an item that one could justifiably ask to be removed.

If you've just read this post, then you must send me £1 for Bullsh!t Offset Tax - thank you.
