High pitched whine from behind grill - QUATTROMAN - 27-01-2012 11:39pm

I heard a high pitched whine from behind grill after engine has been stopped for approx 15 mins -ambient temperature approx 5 deg- surely its not the coolant pump running as I had only been out for a short 20 min drive through town and back.
I managed to stop the noise by restarting the engine and then shutting down a moment later and then listend for the high pitch sound which was still there, but I then heard a click and the noise stopped
I dont think it was the cooling fan but sounded more like a whine -havnt heard it since.
I could understand if the engine temp was hot but as I probably reached no more than 35 -40 mph over the 20 mins it probably hadn't even reached full operating temp.
Any one else experienced this ?

Yes, mine does this a lot, dont think its abnormal?! heard it from other cars too, but dont know what it is. I thought it might be a pwm control on the lights but still get it when the lights are off, only lasts a few minutes after stopping sometimes, as far as I know!

Our Freelander and Evoque does it, both SD4 engines. Not sure what it is, sure it is normal though!

Mine does it too...

There are a couple of threads in the Freelander 2 forum, various ideas such as invertors, turbo coolers, 4wd drive compressors, egr actuator, but all guesses, no definitive word from anyone who actually knows the source of the noise. The most popular guess was something electrical.

Same with mine - thought it might be related to the auto lights or something similar.

I only spotted this yesterday after changing my interior bulbs - thought it might be related to that and was panicing slightly ... However, all the above people with the same have put my mind at rest!

the 2010 RRS does it too.....I just say it is talking to itself.....

Nothing to worry about - it's just the various systems in the vehicle shutting down. On Freelander 2 if you double lock it forces the system to shut down faster and stop the whine, assume Evoque is the same.

But why can't they shut down quietly?!
