Loud bang, lower control arm bolt fell out? - Nickj - 13-06-2019 07:47pm

Hi all-not been on her for a while. Seen my 2016 facelift conversion thread has been getting a fair amount of views, but pics are missing so will go back in and add some shortly.

Anyhoo, travelling home from airport, loud bang, sounded like I’d ran over something, but didn’t see anything and nothing exiting the rear of the car. Stopped but couldn’t see anything. Carried on, occasional knock, another loud bang then car settled down. Decided to carry on journey home but something not right. Checked this morning and looks like a bolt has fallen out from lower control arm. No obvious changes to drive, although it does squeak a tiny bit on pumps.

Googled and found a thread posting exactly my issue.

Appears to be a damper bolt? Anyone know why this would fall out and is it just a direct replacement bolt. Can’t seem to find anything on line regarding replacement?

Inner rubber looks bit chewed?

Passenger side and I guess what it should look like?

Any ideas on what it does/ what it’s called, and a cheap replacement?

Suspension lower arm end cap or perhaps a vibration damper?

I’ve tried searching damper but can’t seem to find anything. Do you think it just screws up again, or is the rubber inside an issue? Car seems to make a noise now? Doesn’t effect drive / steering in any way?

Does indeed look like a Mass Damper to remove vibration.

You probably found this already but, heres some detail on the suspension, that suggests it's a mass damper.

Doesn't seem to come with the control arm though.

Thanks Phil, I had indeed found that. Mass damper seems to be the key but can’t actually find any parts listed with this description. Guess I will have to go LR and see what they say.

Any idea show a mass damper works and is the rubber bit the pic part of it or need replacing?

I think the arm goes into the rubber bush which is all part of the control arm assembly, the Mass damper is probably no more than a weight of metal that screws into the end of the control arm bush from the looks of it, it's literally what it says, its a Mass, so a weight on the other side of the bush that stops the control arm going into resonance.

So i'd expect you could get a new weight, and screw it back in. Can you see a thread in the centre end of your control arm?

try this, Might need a bolt too from the looks of it!

Just to update this. The bolt was missing and I replaced with the Oem bolt but made no differnece. Mot time arrived and my front spring failed as it was broken! Wasn’t obvious from a casual look around the wheel in situ. Bit surprised a spring would break on 5 year old car but ho hum. New spring was cheap enough, and all sorted and mystery resolved.
