Large clunking noise from rear of the car as I drive off... - fam1x - 30-08-2017 10:37pm

I have had my car from new and only done 37000 miles. fully serviced every year.

On Monday 28th Aug, I was stopped on a red light went to move off and heard a loud noise from the car. Followed by warning messages several minutes later.

First one Warning message appeared HDC Not Available System Fault, Stability Control Not Available, and then Sat Nav and Radio system wont turn on.

Took it to a LR Specialist to diagnose the issues. They spent 2 hours scanning the car for the HDC light appeared on the car. Reported back that their is a problem with the Rear Diff on my car, It needs replacing.

I was shocked to hear this sort of issue on a relative new car. I was told its a common fault on LR Freelanders and Evoque. Hence me reporting on here, I was wondering if any of you evoque owners come across this on your ageing cars Smile

I called two local LR dealers to get hold of their service department to see if they could help look at my car. First one couldn't see me, 2nd one said it will take them 3 days to diagnose the issue and I would have to leave my car with them. Once I found out what the issue was I called the first LR dealer to see if I could speak with one of their engineers to get an understanding. I couldnt believe it when the person on the phone said they can only book me in for a service. I was thinking wow thats customer services from LR.

Thanks

I haven't much experience of Evoque ownership - only had mine since March.
But Freelander 2s have a similar (possibly the same) transmission to the early Evoques.

Freelanders CAN chew through rear differentials, some have failed as early as 20,000 miles, there was a low level repair authorised by LR, which replaced the pinion bearings - the main cause of the failure.
Note some have chewed through several rear differentials, there was a software "update" that modified the gearbox/haldex software to make life easier for the rear diff.
Speaking from experience mine developed a pinion oil leak pre 10,000miles, this was repaired under warranty, I had the rear diff drilled and an oil drain plug fitted, and changed the oil every 15,000 miles, it was still silent and going strong at 185,000 miles when I sold her (Big mistake).

I suggest you nip onto the Freel2 website (also run by Martin who runs this website), get the details of Austin at Bell engineering who sell a modified rear differential, with larger pinion bearings - I think they are a site sponsor on that website

Oh dear Fam1x, that's sad to hear, yes I've heard of Bell engineering, they say they uprate the rear diff bearing and housing, and exchange your unit, they do a drive in fitting service, but might be a bit of a trip for you.

Let us know how you get on.

I have left it with Rocker Land Rover today waiting to find out what they say.

I spoke to Austin at Bell and he was saying it could be the Haldex unit which got me a little more confused. Hence a trip do LR see what happens Sad think its time for a new car Sad
