The TD4 will do exactly the same as the SD4 auto, just have to be careful on steep climbs not cook the clutch.

In wet conditions there are tracks at my local LRE Centre that Evoque and Freelander can go up and down while Discovery/Sport/Range Rover can only go down.

All LRE cars are standard production models albeit usually top of the range and are fitted with whichever tyres LR are fitting to equivalent models at the time of build.

Wouldn't it be a bit naive to think the Discos low ratio, air suspension and rock crawl counted for something?

You're right Disco's low ratio, air suspension and rock crawl do count for something.
Where Evoque and Freelander gain is that they weigh about 1 tonne less than the other vehicles and are therefore a bit more nimble when it comes to climbing wet slippery hills where you need a combination of traction and momentum and the highest practicable gear.
Where Evoque and Freelander can struggle is when ground clearance becomes an issue, such as on rutted tracks and then air suspension equipped cars will gain.

That's what I heard more or less at the LRE center in Belgium. It was a SD4 but only had 17" wheel, which the instructor wasn't very happy with as you loose 1cm of ground clearance.
Some sections were only for the freelander and the evoque, whereas there were sections which were only accessisble by the other cars. The reason was indeed weight and ground clearance.
