Tuning Boxes

Reading through a couple of threads on remapping, and its something i would like to do later on down the line, however due to being based in Gibraltar, i don't have a local tuner who i could go to for a remap, and i have a serious lack of knowledge on the spanish market.

On my current fiat i have installed a tuning box, which was easy to do and with which i have been very happy with. It is based on the novitec one (ferrari owners may be aware of these guys). I have seen from the guys i used before this option available for the FL 2 on the 2.2diesel, would this work on a TD4 Evoque? (going to ask them the same question but there are some knowledgable people on here Wink)

Also main advantage is i can remove for servicing and then refit, so dont have to worry about going back to a tuner. (I would have considered getting a remap on a trip to the UK but the wiping problem at service time is a problem.)
Ok been looking into this a little more an realise there is an issue regarding the ECD17 family of ECU's which are apparently tuning proof, so can not be reflashed through the OBD port.

I assume this will be sussed by some clever tuning company at some point, as the manufacturers using this must know what to do as they will carry out software updates through the OBD port.

RE: Tuning Boxes

Most common rail tuning boxes trick either the rail pressure sensor, or fuel temp sender. They manipulate the signal so as to increase the fuel pressure and volume, to produce more torque.

This will most certainly give an improvement in engine output, but these devices can only add more fuel. Since Evoque is fitted with DPF, the increase in particulate matter caused by this overfuelling will most probably mean more problems.

A good remap will not only increase fuelling, but will also ratio in many other factors, such as boost pressure, torque limiters, etc, to produce a well balanced, and clean running calibration.

RE: Tuning Boxes

I'd very much doubt if you'd want to tune your SD4 once it arrives as it has heaps of torque as standard....if you want more power I'd advise you buy the Si4...

Unfortunately only a TD4, but as i understand its the map which holds it back for economy purposes, then again torque difference is only 20nm between the two.

Not looking for all out power, just wary i am going from a light petrol turbo into a heavy diesel so the driving experience is very different, though i do want a more relaxed driving experience.

RE: Tuning Boxes

How does a tuning box actually work then?

It seems to have all the right jargon TUV approved, and things like this are very popular, including superchips bluefin and so on.

They are a cheap way of producing some power, they dont have a lot of components inside and are generally produced cheaply see picture and scematic below.

A propper remap is the best way to go where ever possibile, though they do have a small place in the market for some people so its really down to what you wish for your car and can get hold of that does a good job for you personally.

RE: Tuning Boxes

reminds me of those resistor in a box things that cost about a fiver on ebay many moons ago.

I would much rather have a professional map, however for me its the difficulty of finding a renound and reliable tuner near me. Anyway plenty of time to ionvestigate car not going to arrive until march.

Cool Very Happy

Any ideas if the 'double' remap will be available for the TD4?
