Possible remote boot close module failure?

So I fitted one of these modules purchased from Phil off here. It worked a treat and has never failed. Lately however, the boot is playing up. A press of the key fob or boot button pops the boot open a tiny bit then self closes again. I have to press the button then quickly grab the boot before it closes itself. Then I have to painstakingly pull the boot open manually... Embarrassed

Then a press of the fob closes it as normal. It’s a bit of a 50/50 with this though as sometimes it opens as normal. I’m paying for extended warranty but last time I took my vehicle in for a rear camera replacement, they opened the rear cover and the “technician” said I have an aftermarket camera and therefore it was not covered under warranty. Somehow he discovered that the extra wires and boot module was an aftermarket cheap camera. On a dynamic lux? I explained what it was but he was having none of it so I removed the “aftermarket camera” myself and showed it to him along the part numbers and compared it to a same car. Apparently they had never seen this type of camera before as the newer model camera is smaller and mine is a 2014.

Anyway that was replaced but I doubt they would be happy to work on my tailgate knowing it had been modified. Any ideas anyone and if I have a warranty on this module... Phil???

RE: Possible remote boot close module failure?

Sounds like the OEM system needs resetting - the instructions are in the owner’s manual IIRC. Has you car recently been workshop or been serviced as sometimes I have had to reset the tailgate opening limits after a service for both my previous Evoques and RRS’s

A Pangea Green New Defender 110 First Edition is now sitting on my drive alongside British Racing Green Electric Mini Cooper SE Level 3. After 21 years in my hands my TDI300 90 was handed on to the next custodian on 15 July 2022.

The last time it was in was just for the reverse camera to be replaced but the next service is due soon. I’ll have a go at the reset procedure but it’s odd because it only happens sometimes.

RE: Possible remote boot close module failure?

The module will be causing it, first check it is still stuck in the tailgate correctly, sometimes the hot sun can cause the glue to go soft and the module hangs down. The angle of the module is quite critical.

RE: Possible remote boot close module failure?

Hi Phil, I’ve had a quick look at the module and it appears to still be in place but I will double check tomorrow. Also, for anyone else who has this module, once the boot is open or partially open, a press of the key fob slightly raises the tailgate, another press does this again and again until it is nearly raised to the max before it closes once it is fully open. Not a major problem but I just wondered if anyone else’s does this.

I am reluctant to make a warranty claim for this as they know I have modified the tailgate wiring and definately will not help with this. If the module still seems to be in the right place, I may have to undo it to see if this fixes the problem as it has become more frequent and rather annoying lately. On a separate note, a forum search showed that another owner had a similar issue and his was caused by a low battery or something. My vehicle has suffered from low battery warnings quite frequently over the 3 yrs but not so much as of late. My stop/start only ever works after a long motorway drive. Only works a few days then doesn’t work again until another very long drive.

Mine is a 14 plate. Possibly require a new battery?

RE: Possible remote boot close module failure?

the fault does actually sound slightly different to the usual failure, in that the boot has been known to re-shut immediately after opening a couple of inches.

I would disconnect the yellow wire from the car wiring and see if all operation returns to normal, before thinking about taking it to LR. If it still does it after that remove the module completely before taking it back for Warranty work, they will not undertake Warranty while the module is in the car.

Unless you are having issues starting the engine also, I would not get into changing the battery for this.

RE: Possible remote boot close module failure?

So it’s been nearly 3 weeks and after disconnecting the yellow wire, the boot opening works perfectly. Unfortunately it has left me without the remote boot closing. I’ve had a look at the module and it is still tightly attached in its original position. This problem has only come recently and possibly could be due to the hot weather messing up the module. Does anyone else with this module have any problems like mine?

I’ve booked in for a service and I mentioned it to them but I guess I’ll tell them I fixed it otherwise they’ll start poking around.

Is there anyway I can test this module because as stated previously, this only happens intermittently.

Hi Stilolos

If you want to send the unit back to me I can test it for you free of charge.
Unfortunately I don't make these anymore as you can buy Chinese ones just as cheaply now, so I can't replace it.

PM me and i'll send return details.

Phil

RE: Possible remote boot close module failure?

Thanks for the offer Phil. My car was in for a service today and I told them the boot was fixed so it was taken off the job sheet. Anyways, I received a call saying they had identified the problem and that the tailgate needed a new micro switch. I didn’t remove the unit and just unplugged the yellow wire and I assumed they wouldn’t be poking around but it seems they did. I dont get my car back till tomorrow but they didn’t mention if it would be covered by the warranty.

I’ll let you know what happens when I get my car back.

P.s the service cost £525! I needed an mot as well and they wanted £54! Asked them to do it cheaper and got it together for £540.

I don’t remember servicing being so expensive but oh well.

OK well that's interesting, see if it makes a difference!

Yes Dealer services are expensive, I use an Independent LR specialist they come in around £340. MOT is £44, but there are places in my town will do it for £29, but it's so much easier to just get it done all together on 1 visit.
