How to transform your evoque digital experience on a budget

Hi Everyone,

I recently did a major modification to my evoque. The details are in these 2 LinkedIn articles.

1. How to transform your In-Car digital experience on a budget

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-trans...adam-ali-/

2. What is CAN bus and why do you need to care

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-vehi...adam-ali-/

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Cheers

I have read your links to the LinkedIn articles in great detail, thanks for posting a very interesting article.
Although my background is in Control Systems and Instrumentation, I always worry about getting into a mess ( basically locked out of the CAN BUS or generating standing errors) when changing ECUs like the infotainment unit.
I like to do most things myself, so haven't the benefit of the said Sydney expert, but my question are:
Have you actually tried this arrangement yourself or merely passing on LinkedIn Adam Ali's article?
If the former, did you undertake the procurement and the installation yourself?
How much did the whole exercise cost?
Have there been any glitches, snags, erroneous faults ?
How are you dealing with any manufacture's warranty?

Many thanks

Derek

RE: How to transform your evoque digital experience on a budget

Hi Derek,

I’m Adam Ali, the author of the 2 articles.

The Head Unit in that Car is not an ECU. It is just a monitor/screen/display. The most difficult bit of the installation was removing the driver seat and finding the best way to pass on the cable all the way to the display. If you do very good planning with rollbacks on the way in case something happens plus may remote support from Cameron, you should be fine.

The exercise was done on phases, the biggest phase was the installation of the Merryway Head Unit. That took around 2.5 hours and Cameron from OldJaguar did all of it. I did the design and planning and a few other things and I was there helping when it was done. The Merryway unit is around $800 USD or depending on when you would buy it plus the installation cost.

There was another phase for fitting the Apple CarPlay and Joli cup holder. That took 2 hours as well. I try in my fittings to hide everything and make it look like it did cane with the car.

The side camera part is not done yet.

There were faults raised as part of disconnecting multiple cables which were cleared by Gap Giagnoatic Tool.

The manufacture has 1 year warranty. They are a bit difficult to communicate with but let’s be honest about the whole thing, Land Rover left is no choice by pursuing these kind of options. Land Rover could have simply started a business unit (re hire what they have fired) to do retrofitting for old models.

Merryway is a big name in China and their solutions is common among luxury car owners.

I’m still testing the solution but so far i’m Happy with the outcome. It did really transform my car to a connected one.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Well, many thanks for your quick reply Adam, I followed your link for the head unit but couldn't find the price etc. Your solution is certainly the way to go, I'd love to have a go at that but it's still a fair bit of money for me, I'm thinking with installation costs, the total must have been a shade over USD 1000? I guess in the scheme of things that is probably about the going rate.
Three years warranty here in the UK so I've got a bit to go yet. I'll be interested to see how it goes for glitches, I presume the faults codes were cleared by the installer?

Thanks again Adam,

Thanks again Adam,

Hi Derek,

I cleared the fault codes using the GAP Diagnostic Tool. It's a nice tool to have to verify things. They sell it on Aliexpress. Please note that I don't have any relationship with Merryway and I don't represent them. Please make sure to tell them your car model or send a picture of the dashboard to order the correct version that fits with your car model. I suggest that you take your time going through the details and also reference https://topix.landrover.jlrext.com/topix for your vehicle to see how you would go about the installation. You can add me on linkedin and if I'm london this year, may be we can catchup for a drink or something.

Here is the marketing director Skype from Merryway: jenny-baby1990

You can ask her. She was the main contact when I bought my ones.

Happy to help.

In Itally and other countries in europe they have installed that. here is are a few video

Do you still get to keep the 4x4 info screen and trip info somehow?

Yes, you can access all the existing functions. It is detailed in my article. Can send you some screen shots too to make sure we are talking about the same thing.
